You’re not the first person to panic-google this at 2AM as a drug test looms on the horizon. How long does a THC vape stay in your system? Unfortunately, we can’t give you a one-size-fits-all answer or dispel your fear. It depends on so many moving pieces.
- When did you last use a THC vape?
- How often (and for how long) have you been using a THC vape?
- What’s your body fat and metabolism?
- What type of drug test are you taking?
These are just a few of the many questions we’ll have to get to the bottom of to help you feel more confident preparing for a THC vape drug test. In general, though, a light user (someone who hits a weed pen every few days, just once or twice) might only need a week or so. Someone who uses their weed pen all day, every day, could need more than a month.
We’ve got a lot to unpack, so grab a THC vape pen from MUNCHIES! for after you pass your test with flying colors, and let’s take a closer look at THC vape detection times below.
Do Weed Pens Show Up on Drug Tests?
Wait, do weed pens show up on drug tests in the first place? Yep. THC is THC. Doesn’t matter if you smoked it, vaped it, ate it, or even used it sublingually. The only type of cannabis product that won’t put you in peril of failing a drug test is a topical one.
But HOW do weed pens show up on drug tests? It’s time we introduced you to the concept of THC metabolites, since those are what drug tests actually look for in your urine.
How Do Drug Tests Detect THC?
Your liver converts THC to a metabolite called THC-COOH (11-nor-9-carboxy-THC) when you hit your vape - or, when you smoke weed / enjoy an edible. It’s just what THC gets broken down to in your body. It’s what drug tests are actually screening for, not the THC itself.
The test doesn't care whether your cartridge contained delta-9 or delta-8. THCA (that converts to delta 9 THC when heated) and THCP both break down into the same metabolite. Anything that gets you high can eventually become THC-COOH, and thus, could cause you to fail a drug test.
Urine tests use immunoassay screening as the first step. A confirmation test using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS follows any positive result to confirm the results. The initial screen is a lot less precise, and sometimes causes false positives.
Understanding THC Metabolite Thresholds
You can technically have a little THC-COOH lingering in your system and still pass a drug test. That’s because they’re not absolute. There are cut-offs for what constitutes a positive result. That’s 50 ng/mL for most drug tests - the federal workplace standard under SAMHSA guidelines. Anything below it comes back negative, even with metabolites present in the sample.
The confirmation test applies a tighter cutoff of 15 ng/mL if the initial screening triggers above 50 ng/mL. This rules out false positives.
Just know that not every employer or agency uses this same standard. Some private employers set stricter standards, as do certain federal positions or safety-sensitive jobs. But for the sake of simplicity, it’s safe to assume you just need to get below that 50 ng/mL level.
How Long Does a THC Vape Stay in Your System?
All that being said, how long does a THC vape stay in your system? The honest answer is we don’t have an answer. We would need to sit down with you and ask a lot of really specific questions about your usage habits, your biology/body chemistry, and the type of test you’re in for. And even then, the best we’d be able to offer is an educated guess.
That’s the tricky part about THC vape drug test protocols. The only way to say with 100% certainty that you’ll pass your test is complete abstinence for a long period of time. That said, let’s help set your expectations a little bit.
The Typical THC Vape Urine Detection Window
Urine testing is the most common method for a THC vape drug test, especially in workplace screening. So how long does a THC vape stay in your system in this case? THC vape detection times typically look like this:
- Single or occasional use (once every few weeks): 3-8 days
- Moderate use (a few sessions per week): 5-15 days
- Daily vapers: 15-30 days
- Chronic heavy use: 30-60 days
Something that you have to keep in mind is that THC-COOH is fat-soluble. Your body stores it in fat cells and slowly but surely lets it out over time. Someone who hit a vape a few times at a party is going to be in the clear much faster than someone who hits their vape after work and before bed every single day.
Vaping also tends to deliver higher peak blood concentrations than smoking flower because concentrates are more efficient. We’ve seen figures say that vaped THC bioavailability can be as high as 80%, compared to just 30% or so for combusted flower. Translation: you end up with a lot more raw THC for your body to metabolize when you use concentrates.
What About Saliva, Blood, and Hair Tests?
It’s safe to assume you’re taking a THC urine drug test. But that’s not always the case.
Saliva tests are used to catch recent use. These are common in workplace accidents or roadside checks. The THC vape detection times for saliva typically land in the 24-72 hour window after your last session. The cutoff for most oral fluid tests is only 4 ng/mL for parent THC (not the metabolite), which is why the detection window is so much shorter than urine.
Then you have blood testing, which is even less common than saliva. It’s only used in DUI investigations or clinical settings. THC itself clears from blood within hours. Again, though, metabolites can stick around for up to a week depending on how you vape.
Hair is what catches most people off-guard. It’s the total opposite end of the spectrum as far as THC vape detection times go. IT can detect THC metabolites for up to 90 days! Heavy vapers have a hard time with this test regardless of how long they've abstained. Don’t think shaving your head is going to save you, either. It won’t. Labs can pull body hair as an alternative sample.
Factors Influencing THC Vape Detection Times
We said from the get-go there’s no way for us to tell you for sure how long it’ll take you to get clean for a drug test. These are some of the variables impacting THC vape detection times.
Your Usage Habits
By far the biggest factor influencing your THC vape drug test risk. Few things to think about:
- How long have you been vaping THC?
- How often do you use your THC vape?
- How long of pulls do you take from your THC vape?
Answering all these questions helps you figure out what you classify as - light user, moderate user, heavy user, chronic heavy user, etc. Obviously, the more THC into your system, the longer it takes to get it all out. That’s just simple math.
Daily or near-daily vaping builds a reservoir of THC-COOH in adipose tissue. Your body will continue to release stored metabolites for weeks after you stop. The jump between occasional and daily use isn't just a bigger number. It's a completely different situation.
The Type of THC Vape You Use
Not all vape products deliver the same THC payload. There are delta 8 THC vapes, delta 9 THC vapes, and even unique varieties like our THCP vape collection here at MUNCHIES!
The point is, you need to get more specific about what exactly you’re vaping. A high-concentration cartridge rated at 80-90% THC puts way more cannabinoids into your bloodstream per puff, and thus, more THC metabolites into your fat cells. So, what is considered high THC vape? Anything over 75-80% in our books.
Live resin and full-spectrum cartridges also carry additional minor cannabinoids that get metabolized alongside THC. Our THCA vape pen collection uses liquid diamonds, which are super potent.
When in doubt, remember this straightforward equation:
More THC going in = more metabolites coming out = longer detection window.
Your Body Fat and Metabolism
You know by now that there is a pretty strong correlation with body fat and THC vape detection times. That’s because THC-COOH is lipophilic, meaning it binds to fat cells. Someone with more body fat has more places for THC metabolites to hide.
That same person also has a slower metabolism, which is going to translate to a longer detection window as well. People with low body fat and rapid metabolisms can just get clean more quickly.
It’s worth noting that exercise can temporarily spike metabolite release as fat cells break down. That’s something you can use to your advantage if you have enough of a runway before your drug test - work out as much as you can to burn off more THC metabolites. BUT you have to stop a few days before your drug test to prevent sending more metabolites into your urine.
How to Prepare For a THC Vape Drug Test
At the end of the day, there’s really only one guaranteed way to pass a THC vape drug test - stop using your vape long before the drug test day arrives.
That means you’re out of luck if the drug test was a surprise. You may have to explore alternatives, like the dilution or substitution methods. We’ve done each of those ourselves, and will let you do your own research if you want to explore those solutions.
But we’re going to assume you have a little bit of time on your side and want to know how to prepare for a THC vape drug test on the horizon. This is the advice we give all our customers who come to us freaking out in this situation:
- Stop ASAP: The moment you hear you have a drug test coming up, you’re done using your THC vape. Or your edibles. NO THC, PERIOD. The clock on your THC vape detection time doesn’t start until you stop using it.
- Go into fat-burning mode: Diet and exercise like a madman leading up to your drug test, as you can speed up your body’s THC-metabolite-clearing process this way.
- Build up a new layer of fat a few days prior to the test: This sounds weird, but the idea is that any fat you burn puts fresh THC metabolites into your urine. So, you want to avoid letting that happen as the test gets closer. Stop exercising and eat whatever you want.
- Drink plenty of water: You’re probably going to take a urine test. The more pure water you pee out, the less concentrated the THC metabolites are. Drug tests are more sophisticated these days, though, and will be able to tell you’ve “diluted” your sample. Which leads to our next tip…
- Make sure you take the right vitamins and supplements: Vitamin B12, creatine - there are things you need to take leading up to the test to avoid making it look like your urine is ultra-diluted.
- Try to collect the right sample: Ideally, you’d have urinated multiple times the morning before your test. Your first few pees are “more potent,” so to speak. The same goes for the beginning and end of your urine stream. Make an effort to catch mid-stream for the sample.
You can also get some sense of peace of mind by purchasing some at-home drug tests to get a better idea of where you’re at. You might find that you’re already under the 50 ng/mL threshold, and you actually have nothing to worry about!
What you DON’T want to do - anything desperate. Don’t drink bleach or consume an insane amount of niacin because someone on Reddit said it worked. Don’t waste your money on detox drinks that claim they’ll have you peeing clean overnight.
Truthfully, time is the only guaranteed way to pass a THC vape drug test.

Frequently asked questions
Does THC vape show in urine test?
Yes, but only in the sense that THC vapes will put THC metabolites in your system. The test itself isn’t going to know whether you vaped, smoked, or ate THC.
How long will vaping show up in a urine test?
3-8 days is normal for occasional users, but regular vapers could need at least 15-30 days to get clear. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer on the THC vape detection times, so we always encourage you to err on the side of caution and stop using your vape ASAP.
Will I fail a drug test if I was just around someone vaping THC?
Very unlikely, so don’t bother using this excuse if you fail a drug test. Secondhand vapor contains trace amounts of THC, but nowhere near enough to push metabolite levels above the 50 ng/mL cutoff on a standard test.
Will a CBD vape pen make me fail a drug test?
Only if it’s made with full-spectrum CBD, which contains trace amounts of THC. Even then, it’s unlikely.
Can I flush THC out faster by drinking lots of water?
No - it’s not going to speed up THC metabolism. Drinking tons of water before a test dilutes your urine, which MIGHT temporarily drop metabolite concentrations below the threshold. Labs flag overly diluted samples and usually require a retest, so make sure you take the right vitamins/supplements if you attempt this method.
Are detox drinks for THC drug tests legit?
Usually not. They’re just diluting your urine and adding vitamins/creatine to cover up the dilution. You can do that yourself for a fraction of the cost. But just know you’re not actually “detoxing” anything. It’s marketing-speak.
Does it matter if I used legal THC products?
Nope. Even though cannabis products are legal nationwide (as long as they’re derived from hemp and contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight), employers can still drug test you - as can the court.
