HHC (or Hexahydrocannabinol) is a naturally-occurring chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. HHC is a cannabinoid (like THC and CBD) and is one of almost 150 that have been discovered thus far.

HHC has begun to make a name for itself in the cannabis industry right alongside the greats like delta 9 THC, CBD, and delta 8. But what is this cannabinoid, and what should you know about it in terms of HHC and drug tests?

If you’ve been interested in trying this cannabinoid but have been hesitant due to murky waters regarding the legality of HHC as well as HHC and drug tests, this means you’ve probably done some panic googling. Does HHC show up on a drug test? Will HHC test positive on a drug test? Does HHC pass a drug test? Will HHC fail a drug test?

Thankfully we have the answers to those questions! So sit back, relax, and read on to learn a thing or two about HHC drug tests and if they can see HHC on a drug test.

Delta Munchies has got you covered with the best in class HHC. Check ’em out!

What is HHC?

HHC is a hemp-derived cannabinoid that boasts a pretty hefty potency similar to its cannabinoid relative delta 9 THC. (For reference, delta 9 THC is the cannabinoid that we’re most familiar with and the one that’s responsible for the psychoactive experience that’s associated with weed.) HHC is roughly 80% as potent as delta 9 THC as well as 20% more potent than delta 8 THC.

HHC was discovered and created in 1944 by an American chemist named Roger Adams. Roger Adams found that adding hydrogen molecules to delta 9 THC during a process called hydrogenation created a chemical reaction that converts THC into HHC. This means that HHC is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid. We understand the term ‘synthetic cannabinoid’ can sound a little scary, but it just means that the cannabinoid is still naturally-occurring but needed to undergo that chemical reaction to exist.

Just like other cannabinoids like THC and CBD, HHC reacts with the endocannabinoid system (or ECS) in the human body. The ECS contains two types of naturally-occurring cannabinoid receptors throughout the body (CB1 in the nervous system and CB2 in the immune system) which interact with different cannabinoids to produce the various physical and mental feelings and effects we’ve come to know from the cannabis plant.

Does HHC Get You High?

The answer to this question is mostly yes. But when it comes down to it, the answer isn’t as cut and dry as you may think. Whether or not you feel high from consuming HHC depends on many different factors, such as your previous cannabis tolerance, body mass, unique physiology, and overall health.

Since HHC isn’t quite as potent as delta 9 THC, if you have a super high tolerance for delta 9, HHC might not feel like it’s doing much for you. But if you have a low tolerance for cannabis in general, a cannabinoid that’s 80% the potency of delta 9 THC is more than enough to get you high.

Alternatively, even if you do have a tolerance for other cannabinoids, HHC can still provide a psychoactive experience, it’s just different and a little more mellow than traditional cannabis. HHC is an excellent option for people who want to change up the vibe and try a different level of high! But because it can get you high, many people want to know if you can find HHC on a drug test.

Will HHC Fail a Drug Test?

There’s a lot to know about HHC and drug tests. Does HHC show up in a drug test? The short answer is yes, most likely.

While there hasn’t been enough research done to give a definitive answer to this question, the anecdotal evidence that’s been found thus far points to the fact that HHC will show up on a drug test. An HHC drug test (or a Hexahydrocannabinol drug test) is typically this.

Does HHC show up in urine tests? Although HHC is not considered THC, there isn’t much research up to this point know if HHC will show up in urine tests. Some users have said that they’ve passed a drug test while using HHC, while others have reported that HHC flagged their drug test as positive. With that being said, we wouldn’t recommend taking a drug test if you’ve ingested HHC within the past 4 weeks. Until there’s more research done and the legal lines become more defined, we wouldn’t take the chance!

What Factors Affect How Long HHC Stays in Your System?

How long does HHC stay in your system? Like most cannabinoids (such as delta 8 THC, delta 9 THC, and CBD), the answer to this question depends on a variety of different factors. Cannabis is not a one-size-fits-all plant, and that goes for each of the cannabinoids that have been harnessed from it as well.

The most important factors that go into how long HHC stays in your system include:

  • How much HHC you have consumed. One of the most important factors that goes into how long HHC will stay in your system is the amount of HHC you’ve consumed. The more you consume, typically the longer it stays in your system. If you’re not a regular cannabis user and eat a single HHC gummy, you probably don’t have to worry about it staying in your system for any significant length of time.

  • How you’ve consumed HHC. Another important factor, the way you consume HHC will also affect how long it stays in your system. Methods of consumption like vaping and smoking are more instantaneous in their effects and will also leave the body a bit quicker. Edibles like gummies and oil-based tinctures, on the other hand, because they’re digested through the stomach will take longer to kick in as well as stay in the system for a longer period of time.

  • Frequency of use. If you’re a frequent user of any cannabinoid, you run the risk of traces of those cannabinoids to build up in your system. Thankfully, there’s nothing to suggest there’s anything harmful about that other than an increased risk of the cannabinoid showing up on a drug test. Again, if you’re someone who rarely if ever uses cannabis, using it one time or even a few times won’t be enough to leave a significant amount of trace cannabinoids in your system.

  • Your overall tolerance. Similar to frequency of use, if you’re a regular cannabis user who has a high tolerance for cannabis, you’ll probably need more product to feel any effects, therefore you’re putting more of the cannabinoid in your system. If you have a low tolerance, you’ll probably need very little to feel any effects which means you won’t have enough of the cannabinoid in your system to make a big difference.

  • Your body mass and unique physiology. It’s simple science: the larger your body mass, the more of a certain substance you may need to feel anything from it. This goes for cannabis, alcohol, and even certain medications.
