What is Full Spectrum Delta 9?

Jar of Delta Munchies' Mango Crush delta 9 THC gummies.

With the release of our brand new hemp-derived, full spectrum delta 9 gummies, we’ve had a lot of people asking all kinds of questions about what “full spectrum” actually means and why a cannabis product being full spectrum is something that matters so much.

In short, full spectrum means that there is the presence of as many cannabinoids as possible in one product. During the harvesting and cultivating process, cannabis scientists have the option to extract cannabinoids on their own, or along with some of their cannabinoid siblings.

For a long time, cannabis researchers have focused on isolating cannabinoids such as THC and CBD to highlight their individual properties; but there’s more evidence being presented that suggests that cannabinoids actually work better together.

But there’s a lot more to know about what full spectrum products are, why they’re so potent compared to other cannabis products, as well as why full spectrum products work so well. It’s incredibly important to know what’s in the cannabis products you’re using, so we’re going to break down precisely what full spectrum is as it relates to delta 9, as well as other cannabinoids such as CBD, CBN, CBG, and more.

Delta Munchies has got you covered with the best in class Delta 9 THC. Check ’em out!

What is Delta 9 THC?

Delta 9 THC is the main form of tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the primary psychoactive component found in the cannabis and hemp plants that is responsible for the “high” users feel when they smoke weed, hit vapes, take infused tinctures, or consume cannabis-infused food and drinks.

THC is only one of over one hundred chemical compounds found inside of the cannabis and hemp plants called cannabinoids. And in perfect synchronicity with nature, the human body also contains a naturally-occurring system called the endocannabinoid system (or ECS), which is specifically designed to interact with these natural cannabinoid compounds.

The endocannabinoid system contains two different cannabinoid receptors, CB1 (or cannabinoid receptor type 1) and CB2 (or cannabinoid receptor type 2). These cannabinoid receptors can be found in the nervous systems and immune systems, respectively. When we smoke weed, hit vapes, take dabs, consume tinctures, or eat cannabinoid-infused edibles, these cannabinoids enter our system and make their way to our bloodstream, where they’re carried around the body to find these different cannabinoid receptors.

Once the cannabinoids reach our cannabinoid receptors and our cannabinoid receptors begin reacting to the presence of the cannabinoids, the human body begins to experience the feelings, effects, and benefits that we’ve come to associate with the use of marijuana.

The Benefits of Delta 9 THC

There have long been avid arguments in favor of cannabis use being beneficial for humans for many different reasons. While ongoing legal obstacles have prevented cannabis research from reaching its full potential, the growing legalization across the United States has amplified scientists’ capacity for cannabis research in recent years. But thankfully, since cannabis use has been widely popular for many years, have plenty of anecdotal evidence to fill in the scientific gaps and give us some insight into the benefits of delta 9 THC.

  • Relief from pain and inflammation. There has been both anecdotal evidence as well as research-backed evidence that has shown that THC aids in the relief of both temporary and chronic pain and inflammation, and many people across the United States are prescribed medical marijuana for these exact reasons.
  • Relief from stress and anxiety. Smoking weed has also been linked to decreased feelings of stress and anxiety. While some people like to unwind after a long day of work with a beer or a glass of wine, other people want to unwind after a stressful day with a joint, a bowl, or an edible.
  • Help with appetite stimulation and other stomach ailments. For some people, getting the munchies can be an unwelcome side effect of smoking weed, but for those who struggle with maintaining a healthy appetite, getting the munchies can actually be a huge help. Additionally, some people have reported that using marijuana has anti-nausea properties and can help with a variety of painful stomach ailments.
  • Relief from insomnia and other sleep issues. Weed is also notorious for making you sleepy. If you struggle with sleep issues like insomnia or nighttime restlessness, delta 9 THC can be potentially helpful with healthy and regular sleep patterns.
  • A psychoactive experience or “high.” Delta 9 THC is considered psychoactive, so it will produce a high when you smoke it, vape it, or consume it in THC-infused edibles or tinctures. Unlike other non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD, delta 9 THC delivers a psychoactive experience along with all of the other potential wellness benefits that can come with cannabis.

It’s important to remember that delta 9 will affect every individual entirely differently based on a variety of factors such as tolerance, body mass, and overall health. This means you may experience some of these benefits of delta 9 THC or you may not. And while delta 9 THC is a spectacular cannabinoid on its own, using a full spectrum product has the potential to enhance your overall delta 9 experience even more.

What is Full Spectrum?

Full spectrum in terms of cannabis products means that the maximum number of cannabinoids possible were extracted from the cannabis or hemp plant during the cultivation and harvesting process. While some cannabis products focus on highlighting only one cannabinoid at a time, there has been increasing research emerging that suggests that the more cannabinoids present in one cannabis product, the better. And although there are more full spectrum delta 9 products hitting the market, the first cannabinoid to dominate the full spectrum market was CBD.

What Are CBD Spectrums?

Since CBD is non-psychoactive, this has allowed it to be the first cannabinoid to be widely legalized and thus researched across the United States. Commonly used for a number of health and wellness purposes, CBD comes in a variety of spectrums: full spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.

Full Spectrum CBD

What is full spectrum CBD? Full spectrum CBD means that it contains a number of different cannabinoids and terpenes alongside CBD, such as CBG, CBC, CBN, CBDa, and/or CBDv. Each full spectrum CBD product is different and thus may have a different combination or variety of other cannabinoids and terpenes in it, so if you’re looking for a specific cocktail of cannabinoids, make sure to check the ingredients of your full spectrum CBD product.

Benefits of Full Spectrum CBD

Depending on your preferences, some full spectrum CBD product pros may include:

  • They provide the entourage effect. The entourage effect is a highly coveted phenomenon that exists in the cannabis world. The entourage effect happens when a large number of cannabinoids exist in the same cannabis product. But what is the entourage effect? Similar to a band, each cannabinoid plays an “instrument” or role of its own. These cannabinoids can still make solo music, but when you put them together, they can create a cannabinoid symphony. When you use a full spectrum CBD product, you’ll get to experience the highly effective entourage effect.
  • It’s a less processed extract. Cannabinoids naturally coexist with each other in nature, so when you try to isolate one single cannabinoid from the others or exclude one cannabinoid from the others, you have to process the extract more than you would by simply extracting the cannabinoid and allowing trace amounts of other cannabinoids to come along with it.
  • They’re accessible and readily available. Full spectrum CBD is actually the most popular CBD product on the market, making it the most easily accessible CBD product as well. CBD is legal in nearly every U.S. state, so most people who live near a smoke shop will be able to access full spectrum CBD products. CBD has become so popular that even some retailers outside of smoke shops are selling it. And if you don’t have a smoke shop or somewhere that sells CBD near you, there are many CBD companies that ship to all 50 states, making it just a few clicks away!

Full Spectrum CBD Cons

Depending on your preferences, some full spectrum CBD product cons may include:

  • They contain trace amounts of THC (<0.3%). To be compliant with federal legal cannabis standards, all full spectrum CBD products must contain less than 0.3% of THC. So if you’re someone who is looking for a full spectrum cannabis experience without THC, full spectrum CBD may not be for you.
  • They can have an “earthy” taste. It’s no secret that weed has a highly distinct smell and flavor, and CBD extract is no exception. Full spectrum CBD products contain the most cannabinoids of all CBD products, which can make them taste even more potent than their extract counterparts. (This actually might be a pro for some people as many people have reported that they actually enjoy the taste, so this one is mostly up to your own personal preference!)

Broad Spectrum CBD

What is broad spectrum CBD? Broad spectrum CBD is extremely similar to full spectrum CBD, with the main difference being the complete absence of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Some people want to consume cannabis products and experience the entourage effect without THC, and broad spectrum CBD can be the perfect cannabis product to provide that experience.

Broad Spectrum CBD Benefits

Depending on your preferences, some broad-spectrum CBD product pros may include:

  • They provide a robust cannabinoid profile without THC. Some people may not want to include THC in their cannabis routine, and that’s okay! There are many reasons someone may not want THC in their system. The cannabis plant is so complex for a reason; the more we learn about other cannabinoids besides THC, the more we realize that there’s a whole wide world of cannabinoids to explore.
  • They provide the entourage effect. Because broad-spectrum CBD still contains a myriad of other cannabinoids besides THC (such as CBC, CBG, CBN, and more), they can still provide the entourage effect, which makes them similarly potent to their full spectrum counterparts.
  • They’re less processed than CBD isolate. While broad-spectrum CBD is a bit more processed than full spectrum CBD (since any traces of THC must be removed), broad-spectrum is still less processed than CBD isolate. (We’d like to note that a cannabis product that’s processed in this way does not make it dangerous. Simply, many cannabis users prefer to use products that are as unprocessed as possible which has made products like these in high demand. Again, it’s all up to personal preference!)

Broad Spectrum CBD Cons

Depending on your preferences, some broad-spectrum CBD product cons may include:

  • Costly. Broad spectrum CBD has a tendency to be more expensive than full spectrum CBD because more processing labor goes into extracting and cultivating the product.

CBD Isolate

What is CBD isolate? CBD isolate is just that; CBD all by itself. Some cannabis users prefer to experience one cannabinoid at a time, and CBD isolate provides a singular experience that can be beneficial in its own ways.

Benefits of CBD Isolate

Depending on your preferences, some CBD isolate product pros may include:

  • They cost less than other forms of CBD. CBD isolate can be found in large quantities, making it more inexpensive than other forms of CBD, such as full spectrum CBD or broad-spectrum CBD.
  • They lack flavor. CBD isolate is flavorless and odorless. This can be great for people who don’t like the earthy flavor of more robust CBD products like full spectrum and broad-spectrum. Additionally, this can be a good option for people who like to cook with their cannabis. Because there’s no overwhelming cannabis flavor, CBD isolate can be mixed seamlessly into almost any dish you can think of.

CBD Isolate Cons

Depending on your preferences, some CBD isolate product cons may include:

  • No entourage effect. Obviously, CBD isolate won’t provide the entourage effect. Because there aren’t any other cannabinoids present in CBD isolate, there is no chance of the entourage effect happening.
  • Users may need other cannabinoids to receive optimal results. While there are certain benefits to using a cannabinoid isolate, there’s more research emerging that suggests that the presence of more cannabinoids at once can be more effective than cannabinoids on their own.

Cannabinoids Found in Full Spectrum Cannabis Products

While there are more than 100 cannabinoids found inside the cannabis plant (with more sure to be discovered), there are a few select cannabinoids that are commonly found in full spectrum cannabis products.

CBD

CBD (or cannabidiol) is a phytocannabinoid, which means it’s found in and harvested from the trichomes of the plant. Trichomes are the ‘hairs’ of the hemp and cannabis plants and can be seen holding those sugary-looking crystals that are notorious to the cannabis community. Other well-known phytocannabinoids include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabichromene (CBC), tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), and cannabinol (CBN).

CBDa

CBDa (or cannabidiol acid) is the predecessor or “raw” version of CBD. More specifically, CBDA is decarboxylated to create CBD, just like THCa (or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) must be decarboxylated to produce THC.

CBDv

CBDv (or cannabidivarin) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that is molecularly very similar to CBD. CBDv is found more prevalently in Indica strains as well as strains that are lower in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CBN

CBN (or cannabinol) was the first cannabis compound to be isolated from cannabis extract in the late 1800s. Mostly found in Sativa plants, CBN is mildly psychoactive and binds to the various cannabinoid receptors throughout the body.

CBC

CBC (or cannabichromene) is an abundant cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. It plays a potential role in the entourage effect and the synergizing of other cannabinoids in the body. It’s considered one of the “big six” cannabinoids featured in many full spectrum products.

CBG

CBG (or cannabigerol) is often referred to as the ‘mother of all cannabinoids’ because many other cannabinoids are derived from CBGA, an acidic form of CBG. CBG displays potential for both CB1 and CB2 affinity, which can lead to stronger bonds to the cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system.

What is Full Spectrum Delta 9?

A full spectrum delta 9 product is similar to full spectrum CBD as it’s a cannabis product that features all the cannabinoids necessary to consider it full spectrum, but with delta 9 as a highlight. Delta 9 THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid and does provide its users a “high” when ingested, so this will make full spectrum delta 9 a completely different experience than other cannabis products like full spectrum CBD.

Benefits of Full Spectrum Delta 9

A few potential benefits of full spectrum delta 9 products may include:

  • They provide the entourage effect. Full spectrum delta 9 products are no exception to the entourage effect. In fact, they may even amplify the entourage effect even more than other full spectrum products. Delta 9 THC is a heavy hitter in the cannabinoid world, so the presence of this significant cannabinoid player can amplify the experience of the entourage effect.
  • They are potent and effective. Delta 9 THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid, so it will provide a “high” when ingested. Delta 9 THC is considered strong on its own, so the effects can be even more potent when ingested alongside a myriad of other cannabinoids.
  • You get the best of both worlds. If you’re someone who enjoys the feeling of a psychoactive experience or “high” but who also wants to use cannabis products for wellness reasons as well, full spectrum delta 9 provides the best of both worlds. Not only do you get to experience the psychoactive effects of delta 9 THC, but you get to experience the feelings of the entourage effect that the presence of the other cannabinoids provide.
