What is CDT Delta 8?

Delta Munchies' delta 8 disposables lined up on a multicolored background.

Cannabis-based products are in vogue. Many people are increasingly turning to cannabis supplements for better health or simply to have a good time.

However, just thinking of the sheer amount of cannabis products out there can be disorienting. New products hit the market every year, and getting the right information about them is vital.

In this article, we explore CDT Delta 8 to know exactly what it is and why it’s worth talking about. But before we move on, try our selection of delta 8 vape carts, all made using cannabis-derived terpenes:

Key Takeaways

  • CDT delta 8 means a fusion of delta 8 THC distillate mixed with cannabis-derived terpenes.
  • CDT means cannabis-derived terpenes, while BDT means botanically derived terpenes. The latter refers to terpene compounds obtained from other plants.
  • There’s no fundamental difference between CDT and BDT – they are structurally the same and have similar effects.
  • CDT carts offer a more authentic feel than BDT carts.

Cannabis-Derived Terpenes (CDT)

Cannabis contains many compounds, including cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, essential oils, and fatty acids.

Terpenes are aromatic oils produced from the same glands that give out cannabinoids like CBD and THC. They are mostly known for the rainbow of scents and tastes they give cannabis, but research shows they do more than that. They also protect plants from predators.

But we also know cannabis is not the only plant that produces terpenes. Tea, Spanish sage, conifers, and thyme, are some common sources of terpenes. But, these are classified as non-cannabis-derived terpenes.

Cannabis-derived terpenes number in the hundreds, but experts are unsure of their exact number. However, they have identified a handful and their specific effects. Among the most common cannabis terpenes are:

  • Myrcene
  • Caryophyllene
  • Pinene
  • Humulene
  • Limonene
  • Linalool
  • Terpinolene

There are hundreds of others that have not been well studied. In any case, cannabis research is still quite young, so there’s still a lot to uncover.

What is CDT Delta 8?

Due to the increasing popularity of cannabis and accommodative legislation, new cannabis products enter the market every season. One of these is CDT Delta 8. So, what is it?

As the name suggests, CDT Delta 8 is a combination of two products – terpenes and delta 8 THC. Delta 8 THC is derived from hemp and has more or less similar effects as delta 9 THC – the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Delta 8 THC is naturally produced in such minute amounts that commercial extraction is not economically viable. As a result, cannabis companies synthesize it from CBD.

In terms of experience, delta 8 THC has the same effects as its (in)famous cousin delta 9 THC (or simply THC), albeit dialed back. In other words, the effects of delta 8 THC are not as pronounced as those of delta 9 THC.

Like other cannabinoids, delta 8 THC is believed to have several health benefits, much like delta 9 THC. These include relief from pain, nausea, and insomnia. This cannabinoid may also benefit people seeking calm. When cannabinoids are combined with terpenes, their effects may be enhanced – a phenomenon referred to as the “entourage effect.”

What are Botanically Derived Terpenes (BDT)

When terpenes are derived from cannabis or hemp, they are referred to as cannabis-derived terpenes (CDT). As such, any product that uses cannabis terpenes is also referred to as CDT. So, from the preceding, CDT delta 8 is simply delta 8 extract infused with cannabis terpenes. Pretty straightforward, right?

However, terpenes obtained from non-hemp sources are called botanically derived terpenes (BDT). Earlier, we discussed the many sources of terpenes that aren’t cannabis, e.g., tea, conifers, thyme, and Spanish sage. So, BDTs are extracted from such sources.

Structurally, there’s no difference between a terpene derived from cannabis and that obtained from other plants. A terpene is a terpene. The only reason cannabis is a popular source of terpenes is that it produces lots of them.

Interestingly, some plants produce fewer terpenes but in significantly higher concentrations. For example, the concentration of bisabolol in hemp is less than 0.1%. Chamomile produces the same terpene in concentrations of about 21%. Evidently, extracting bisabolol from chamomile makes more sense than from hemp.

The same applies to a terpene like myrcene. It’s one of the most abundant terpenes in cannabis, so making myrcene extracts from hemp makes business sense. Others, like geraniol and ocimene, are produced in such low concentrations that extracting them from hemp would cost a fortune.

For this reason, companies sometimes use BDT in their products. Third-party analyses will still show that the products are identical to those made with terpenes from cannabis. The only issue seems ethical, to be honest – companies claiming their products are 100% CDT when they contain BDTs!

From a business perspective, it’s almost unavoidable to use terpenes from other plant sources. The companies may use two or three cannabis terpenes and others from other plants to make CDT products.

BDT vs. CDT

So, CDT or BDT, which is which?

There’s no fundamental difference between CDT and BDT apart from the latter being derived from non-cannabis sources.

As we’ve seen, going with BDT makes sense with the terpenes that hemp produces in minuscule amounts. The same terpene will have the same structural formula, whether derived from hemp or other plant sources.

On the other hand, it makes sense to go the CDT way when the terpenes in question are abundant in hemp. So, terpenes like caryophyllene and myrcene are easier to synthesize from hemp.

Bottom line: it makes no difference whether the terpenes used to make vapes are hemp-derived or obtained from other sources. It’s purely a question of economies of scale.

CDT Carts vs. Non-CDT Carts

One way to use terpenes is through vape cartridges or pens.

A vape cart (short for vaporizer cartridge) is a small vessel with smokable cannabis oil. Vape carts are popular because they are attached to reusable batteries and have a wide variety of options. Other types come with a rechargeable, refillable device with various profiles and flavors.

The cart basically comprises an atomizer to heat the oil, a battery, and a chamber to hold the cannabis oil. Depending on the cartridge type, it may have different heating temperatures for different smoking experiences. Lower temperatures are preferred for a more-flavor-less-impact experience, while higher temperatures give less flavor but more intensity.

Therefore, CDT vapes are cartridges with hemp-derived terpene extract.

Delta 8 vape cartridges have two main ingredients – the premium delta 8 THC distillate that creates the effects and terpenes that enhance and focus these effects.

The terpenes are valuable additions for several reasons. For starters, the terps create flavor and taste. Others, like myrcene, may even enhance certain effects. Further, terps like caryophyllene may even activate the endocannabinoid system.

Another advantage of CDT carts is that you can feel the real taste of the cannabis flower. This makes it resemble smoking real cannabis flowers, which most users find appealing. The vapor also gives off that unmistakable cannabis smell.

So, CDT carts are just better by offering more authenticity.

By the way, your cart’s terpene profile determines the vaping experience. Terpenes from sativa plants give the delta 8 THC a more energetic effect, while those from indica strains tend to be relaxing. Generally, blending terpenes with delta 8 THC may have additional health benefits besides the usual flavor and taste.

Indeed, the increasing preference for terpene-infused carts over non-terpene carts owes to the belief that they may enhance the effects of cannabinoids. This has been popularized through the “entourage effect” theory.

Where to Buy CDT Delta 8

At Delta Munchies, we make an array of delta 8 and delta 9 products that meet your health requirements. These range from gummies, oils, tinctures, and vape carts. Like other companies, we’d love to make our carts with only CDTs. But this would unreasonably add costs and increase product prices.

So, we use blends of cannabis-derived terpenes and terpenes obtained from other sources. This does not affect the overall flavor and helps to keep production costs down.

If you want to experience our CDT delta 8 carts, check out Delta Munchies for an in-depth view of our range of products.
