HHC (or Hexahydrocannabinol) is one of the latest cannabinoids to be explored in the time since the introduction of legal, hemp-derived cannabinoids to the cannabis market courtesy of the 2018 Farm Bill. Since then, HHC’s popularity has exploded, launching it to the top of the class with other cannabinoid greats such as CBD, delta 8 THC, and delta 9 THC.

Because of this explosion in popularity, it has left many people wondering about the potential benefits of HHC as well as HHC effects. We know there’s a lot you want to know about this new cannabinoid, so keep reading to learn all about HHC, as well as take a deeper look at some potential Hexahydrocannabinol effects and Hexahydrocannabinol benefits.

What is HHC?

HHC (or hexahydrocannabinol) is a hemp-derived cannabinoid that is found in trace amounts in the cannabis plant. HHC interacts with the body just like any other cannabinoid and is absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to the endocannabinoid system (or ECS.) Once HHC reaches the ECS, it begins to react with our body’s cannabinoid receptors, which help to produce different physical and mental feelings and effects.

How is HHC Made?

HHC was created in 1944 by an American chemist named Roger Adams. In his research on hemp and THC, Adams found that a process called hydrogenation (adding hydrogen molecules to delta 9 THC), causes a chemical reaction occurs that converts THC into HHC.

Is HHC Natural or Synthetic?

Is HHC synthetic? The answer depends on who you ask. Since HHC was discovered by human intervention, some people would consider that to be synthetic. On the other hand, some people consider it to be natural since the chemical reaction could still technically occur in nature. But to find some middle ground, most people consider HHC to be a semi-synthetic cannabinoid.

How Does HHC work?

Since HHC is still relatively new to the cannabis market, the options in terms of ways to use it are a bit limited. Thankfully, there are ways you can consume HHC that are very similar to how you would consumer other cannabinoids like delta 8 THC, delta 9 THC, and even CBD. But as research continues on HHC, we’re sure to see even more ways to enjoy it in the future, such as in HHC tinctures, HHC vapes, and HHC flower or prerolls.

Most places that offer HHC offer it in concentrated forms such as vapes and carts or as HHC edibles like gummies. For example, hre at Delta Munchies, we offer 1g HHC carts in flavors such as Alien OG, Granddaddy Purp, and Maui Wowie, as well as HHC gummies in flavors such as Fruit Punch, Blue Razz, and Melon Dreams.

Is HHC Legal?

When you’re researching the legality of any cannabis component, it’s extremely important to make sure that you find the most up-to-date information as possible. The cannabis laws in the United States are constantly changing, so something that was once legal/illegal may not be anymore.

As of the writing of this article (May 2022), HHC is federally legal in the United States and is available for sale and distribution across all 50 states. The reason that HHC is legal is because in 2018, Congress passed the Farm Bill which allowed trace amounts of THC to be present in hemp that was cultivated for sale and recreational use.

If you’re worried about HHC legality and drug tests, we always recommend erring on the side of caution. Even though most drug tests are specifically looking for THC, and we know that HHC is not considered THC, there have been instances where HHC has flagged a positive drug test. On the other hand, some people have attested to the fact that they’ve passed a drug test while using HHC. Unfortunately, because there’s still so much research left to be done on HHC, there isn’t a concrete answer to this question yet. So just to be safe, we recommend abstaining from all cannabinoids if you know you have an important drug test coming up.

What Are the Effects of HHC?

The research and scientific evidence on HHC is still relatively young, which means we’re relying mostly on anecdotal user experience to tell us about the effects of HHC and the benefits of HHC.

Before going into the effects of HHC and the benefits of HHC, it’s important to remember that cannabis and all of its cannabinoids will affect each person completely differently. Because of a wide variety of unique factors, two people may react completely differently to the same product.

Users who have ingested HHC have said that it has offered a psychoactive experience that feels cerebral, uplifting, and energetic. People have reported that HHC felt more potent than delta 8 THC but less potent than delta 9 THC.

The potential wellness benefits of HHC are also based on what we’ve heard users say so far. Those who have used HHC have said that they were able to enjoy the psychoactive experience of the cannabinoid without the feelings of paranoia, anxiety, or stress that can sometimes come with other, stronger cannabinoids. Users have also said that HHC has shown positive potential in terms of pain relief, stress relief, appetite stimulation, and more, which are typical traits of the cannabis plant.

Will HHC Get You High?

Will HHC get you high? The answer to this question depends on who you talk to. There are a number of factors that go into how you experience certain cannabinoids, including your body mass, unique physiology, overall health, tolerance for cannabis products, frequency of use, and method of consumption.

For example, if you’re someone who does not regularly use cannabis products, HHC may give you feelings of a psychoactive experience or high. But if you’re someone who is a heavy or regular delta 9 THC user, HHC may not pack the same punch, since technically it’s not quite as strong as THC. (But that’s not a bad thing––sometimes you may want to switch things up! That’s the beauty of cannabis. There’s a cannabinoid for everyone and every mood!)

Once again, everything we know about the feelings of HHC is based completely on anecdotal user experiences, but those who have tried HHC and felt a psychoactive experience have reported feeling a high that they’ve described as smooth, energetic, cerebral, and uplifting.

HHC vs. THC

The main difference between HHC and THC besides molecular structure is potency. Even though HHC and THC can act somewhat similarly (and HHC starts out as THC), HHC isn’t actually a form of THC at all. The process of hydrogenation changes the chemical structure of the cannabinoid, therefore turning it into a brand new cannabinoid with its own unique personality.

HHC vs. CBD

CBD is the most commonly used cannabinoid for medicinal or wellness purposes. Many people have said that CBD is great for reducing stress, relieving anxiety, providing pain relief, and aiding in sleep. There’s been suggestions that HHC is great for all of those things as well, but unlike CBD, HHC comes with the potential for a psychoactive experience. In short, HHC may get you high, but since CBD does not contain any psychoactive components, it won’t get you high.

Where Can I Get HHC?

HHC is still pretty new to the cannabis market, so it’s not as widely accessible as other cannabinoid products like delta 8 THC and delta 9 THC. However, with HHC’s growing popularity, more companies and online smoke shops are offering HHC products that can be ordered online and shipped straight to your door.
