What is a Blunt?

A blunt is similar to a joint, but instead of using traditional rolling papers, it’s weed wrapped in a tobacco leaf.

The cannabis community is notoriously pretty divided on the topic of blunts. People either love them or hate them. Some people exclusively smoke blunts because of their strength and slow-burning qualities, while others are staunchly against the tobacco that’s ultimately consumed along with the weed.

Whatever your feelings towards blunts are, we still think knowing how to roll a blunt is a good life skill to have. So we’ll walk you through the process step by step so you’ll always be armed with the knowledge of how to wrap a blunt.

What Do You Need to Roll a Blunt?

To make the perfect blunt, you’re going to need the right supplies. Of course, we always recommend working with what you have, but there are a couple of vital things you’ll need to roll a blunt.

Your Weed Of Choice

First, (and obviously) you’re going to need weed. Pick your strain of choice: Sativa for an energetic, uplifting high, Indica for a super mellow, relaxing high, or a hybrid for a more balanced experience. You also don’t only have to roll up weed in your blunt––you can roll up other cannabinoid flowers like CBD and delta-8, too!

A Grinder

For your weed, you’ll need a proper grinder. Any time you roll up weed, you want to make sure it’s finely ground up so that it burns as evenly as possible. You can find quality ones online or at your local smoke shops, but if you’re in a pinch, you may have luck finding decent ones at your local corner stores or bodegas.

If you don’t have a grinder, check out this list for the best grinders for flower, or you can obviously just use your fingers––just make sure you’re breaking it up as finely as you can!

A Blunt Wrap

Next, you’re going to need a blunt wrapper. Some people disagree on how to make a blunt (dutch masters vs. cigarillos vs. swisher sweets), but this all comes down to personal preference. You can find blunt wrappers online or at your local smoke shops, gas stations, or bodegas.

A Place to Roll

You’ll also need a place to roll the blunt––whether it’s a rolling tray, table, or counter. While you’re just learning, it’s easier to do it on a flat surface. (Once you’ve reached expert level, you’ll be able to roll a blunt almost anywhere, but we’re taking baby steps here!)

Your Fingers and Mouth

Woah, get your mind out of the gutter! It’s not what you think!

You need to know how to close a blunt, and for this, you’re going to need to practice some finger dexterity as you roll. You’re also going to need to use your spit to seal it shut.

Jokes aside, there are some ways around this for those who may have a disability that disallows them to use their fingers or mouths to roll a blunt. There are things like blunt-rolling machines that can assist those with dexterity issues, and if you’re not able to use your saliva to seal the wrap, you can always use water. (Remember, stoner culture must always be inclusive!)

How Do You Roll a Blunt?

Now that you know all of the things you need to roll a blunt, let’s get down to business.

Most people have their own preferences when it comes to how to roll a blunt, but we want to teach you the simplest, most straightforward way to roll a blunt. Then, once you become a pro, you can learn what works best for you and you can switch it up! We’re just here to help you with the first steps.

Step 1: Grind your weed.

grinding weed

The first thing you should do is grind your weed. Make sure it’s evenly crumbled with no big nugs left. It’s essential to make sure your weed is finely ground so that it burns evenly.

You’re also going to want to make sure you get rid of any seeds and stems in the bud. Getting those inside your blunt can cause them to ‘pop’ while you’re smoking it, and if you’ve ever experienced that, it’s not a fun time… at all.

Step 2: Get and disassemble your blunt wrap.

Some blunt wraps come already hollowed out and ready to wrap, but others must be disassembled, meaning you crack the blunt open and dump out the loose tobacco inside. You can break it apart with your thumbs, or you can use a knife or razor blade for a more precise cut.

To break it evenly with your thumbs. First, take both thumbs and pinch the top between both tips, then do the same all the way down the blunt until you have one creased line down to the end. Next, go back up to the top, place the crease between both thumbs, and instead of pinching, you’ll want to rub your thumbs away from each other. The blunt should smoothly crack as you do this process all the way down the crease of the blunt.

Pro tip: We recommend doing this after you’ve already ground up your weed so that you’re ready to go as soon as you break open your blunt. If a blunt wrap is left out in the air too long, it can become stale and hard to work with, breaking apart as you try to roll up weed.

Step 3: Put the weed in the blunt wrap.

It’s important to know how much to put in a blunt. Most blunt wraps can handle between 1 to 2 grams, but this will depend on the particular wrap as well as the density and texture of your weed. (You can also use multiple wraps to make more giant blunts, but again, that’s expert level.)

When you’re putting your weed in the blunt wrap, make sure that it’s evenly spread out throughout the length of the blunt. It shouldn’t be so thin it’s flimsy, but it also shouldn’t be too thick you can’t close it.

Step 4: Close the blunt.

Lastly, and possibly the trickiest part, we must know how to close a blunt. Once your weed is evenly spread inside the blunt wrap, you’ll begin to tuck and roll your blunt over the weed and into itself while simultaneously tamping down the weed with your thumbs, index, and middle fingers. This will create a tight wrap that you’ll start to follow with your tongue (or a very small amount of water) as a moisture-based sealant.

You’ll continue this motion until the blunt is wrapped all the way to the top. If you spaced your weed proportionately, it should be an even thickness throughout, possibly with a slight taper you’ll use as the mouthpiece towards the end.

Let your assembled blunt dry by sitting out for a few minutes or by lightly running your lighter across the damp seals. Once it’s dry, sturdy, and sealed, you’re ready to smoke!

Pro tip: If your blunt is overly wet from your liquid sealing method, you can put it in front of a space heater for 2-3 minutes to help it dry out.

What Are the Advantages of Rolling a Blunt?

People who love blunts really love them. And for a good reason! There are some pretty great advantages of rolling a blunt versus other methods of smoking weed.

  • The burn time is way slower. This not only lets you enjoy the smoking experience for a more extended amount of time, but it helps to conserve your weed. Every stoner knows there’s nothing worse than burning through a whole bunch of weed super quick. This can also be great for group smoking since it can be passed around longer!

  • They’re super strong. This could be a disadvantage for those who aren’t looking for a super intense weed experience, but blunts are a great way to do that for those who need something that packs a punch to get high. In addition, many users have reported a head buzz that comes along with the tobacco leaf, which can create a ‘higher’ experience.

  • They’re portable. Unlike glass pieces which are fragile, harder to conceal, and sometimes are large and clunky, blunts are easy to take on the go. They’re small, easily concealable, and can be easily smoked pretty much anywhere.

While there are a lot of positives to smoking and rolling a blunt, they do ultimately contain tobacco (since in the very nature of the blunt, tobacco leaves are used to roll up weed.) This means that while you’re smoking weed, you’re inhaling and ingesting the tobacco as well.

If this isn’t a dealbreaker for you, then great! But if this is something you’re concerned about, blunts may not be for you. We also think that moderation is a vital factor here as well. So if you’re wary about the additional tobacco consumption, consider smoking blunts as a treat.
