The term vape has become so popular, in fact, that the Oxford dictionary not only added it as an official word, but made it the word of the year in 2014. And while e-cigs and dab pens are still considered vapes, a dry herb vaporizer is another kind of vape worth paying attention to.

Dry herb vaporizers are said to greatly the harshness of the smoking experience, and some researchers have even made claims that smoking weed out of a vaporizer is a healthier alternative to smoking it directly, although the research is still ongoing.

What is a Weed Vaporizer?

A weed vaporizer is a device used to smoke cannabis by heating it up below the level of combustion so that it turns into an inhalable vapor while not actually burning, thereby reducing the amount of smoke that goes into the lungs.

Raw weed doesn’t actually contain THC (or tetrahydrocannabinol), it contains THCA (or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), which is essentially the raw form of THC. To activate the THC in cannabis, it must undergo a process called decarboxylation, which is the process of heating up the THCA until it turns into THC. This is why you must burn it, bake it, boil it, or heat it up in a vaporizer for cannabis to have any psychoactive effects.

In this case, the vaporizer heats up the cannabis enough to trigger the process of decarboxylation without actually reaching the point of burning it and producing toxic smoke.

There are two different kinds of weed vaporizers––desktop vaporizers and portable vaporizers. Desktop vaporizers are much bigger and are meant to be used in a static location like at a desk or on a table. Most desktop vaporizers require an outlet to work as the electricity is what heats up the weed flower. They also allow you to have total control over the temperature of your bud as most of them come with settings that you can personalize to your liking. Many desktop vapes come with big plastic could-like bags that are called ‘volcanoes,’ which is where the vapor is collected and subsequently inhaled.

Portable vaporizers are smaller and are meant to be used on the go. They can be taken with you and can be used in any setting you can use a joint, blunt, or dab pen (and sometimes in settings where you can’t, since weed vaporizers are known for emitting much less smoke than other methods.) Instead of being plugged into a wall, portable vaporizers are rechargeable and run on battery power instead. They are bigger than traditional vapes and e-cigs because they are meant to house and heat raw weed flower, so they have larger inner mechanisms like heating coils and temperature control. Many portable models of vaporizers allow you to easily control your temperature as well with limited settings on the vape.

How to Use a Weed Vaporizer

Learning how to use a dry herb vape pen may seem a little intimidating at first, but it’s actually super easy once you get the hang of it. The only thing you really need to know is how to put weed in a vape pen.

  • Step 1: Grind your weed. One of the biggest mistakes people make is putting bud that’s not properly ground up into their vape. This makes it very difficult to heat up and will compromise the quality of your vaping experience (and is also a great way to waste bud.)

  • Step 2: Put the weed in the heating chamber. Weed vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes, but each of them should have a heating chamber where you will put the weed to be heated up by the battery-powered coils and ceramic.

  • Step 3: Press the button on the vape to begin heating up your vape. Desktop vapes will usually have more buttons to play with, but the end game is the same––you’ll want to find the temperature ‘Goldilock’s Zone’ where you are heating up your bud just enough to vaporize it without burning it. Most vapes have temperature control that won’t allow the temperature to go high enough to induce combustion anyway, but some people like to vape at different temperatures than others. It’s recommended to heat it up to around 360 to 380 degrees F, but you can go outside of that. You can go as low as 300 for a super mild hit or as high as 400 for a heavier hit. All it takes is some practice to find what works for you!

  • Step 4: Inhale. It may not feel like you’re actually getting a hit at first because it’s not nearly as harsh as actual smoke, but you’ll be able to tell because a vaporizer greatly enhances the taste. You’re basically going to get a big, hot, mouth full of weed breath. Very little smoke or vapor will be exhaled when you do, but don’t worry, the THC (or whatever cannabinoid flower you’re using) will still get into your system.

Vaporizing tips: Always make sure your weed is properly ground before use. Grinding your weed increases its surface area and will help it heat up more thoroughly inside the vaporizer. Even if you don’t have a weed grinder, try to do what you can to break it up as much as possible.

Vaporizing tips: Make sure to regularly clean and sanitize your vaporizer. Just like any other smoking device, your weed vaporizer will get clogged with resin and leftover bits. For an optimal experience, it’s vital that you are regularly keeping your vaporizer cleaned and sanitized.

Benefits of Using a Weed Vaporizer

Some people think using a vaporizer is the best way to vape weed, and it’s hard for us to disagree. It all ultimately comes down to personal preference, but there are many benefits of using a weed vaporizer over other methods of consuming THC.

  • It delivers all of the effects of smoking bud without the harsh effects that smoking has on your lungs and throat. The lack of combustion is what leads many people to believe that using a weed vaporizer to smoke weed is the healthiest way to do it.

  • Vaporizers are the least smelly way to smoke weed. Since you’re not actually burning the weed, you’ll experience a heightened taste of marijuana with less smoke as a byproduct. This is great for people who are in need of more discreet smoking sessions.

  • Surprisingly, some people even think using a weed vaporizer is the way to get the highest.

Weed vaporizers are yet another way to enjoy the wonderful plant that is cannabis. The cannabis community is diverse, so the ways we consume it should be, too! If you haven’t found a way to consume cannabis that feels perfect yet, trying out a dry herb vaporizer may be just what you need.
