What is a Backwoods Blunt?

A Backwoods blunt wrap is an all-natural brand of tobacco blunt wrap that’s known for the exceptionally smooth smoking experience it provides. What makes Backwoods stand out from other brands of blunt wraps is that they are made out of 100% pure tobacco leaf, while other, cheaper brands tend to contain synthetics that will greatly sacrifice the quality of the smoking experience.

The process of making Backwoods is also a bit more complicated than other blunts. The tobacco in Backwoods blunts is made exclusively in the United States and must age for an entire calendar year before being rolled into cigars and getting anywhere near the store shelves. The process of aging the tobacco helps to smoothly enhance the flavor making for what many people agree is a superior taste and smoking experience.

Since Backwoods are technically sold as smoking cigars, there are many people who enjoy them as-is. But any seasoned stoner will tell you that there is almost nothing better than rolling up some fresh bud in a fresh Backwood, which is why we’re here to teach you exactly how to do that!

How to Roll a Backwood

If it’s your first time rolling a Backwood, it might be a little intimidating, but don’t worry, it’s really not any more difficult than rolling any other kind of typical blunt. It just takes a little bit of finesse! (Aka patience, practice, and the sheer determination that we know stoners have when they’re desperately trying to figure out how to smoke out of something.)

To get started, there are a few things you’ll need.

  • A pack of Backwoods blunt wraps.
  • A strain of your weed of choice.
  • A grinder or something else to grind your weed with.
  • A rolling tray or a flat surface.

Next, here are the step-by-step instructions on how to roll a Backwood.

Step 1: Prep and grind your weed.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is to pick the strain of weed you want. Generally, we recommend a bright and uplifting Sativa strain if you want a more energetic experience, a chill Indica if you’re looking for a more mellow, relaxing experience, or a hybrid for that perfect ‘Goldilock’s Zone’ high. You also don’t have to use THC weed specifically––you can use CBD flower or delta 8 flower to fill your Backwoods, too!

Once you’ve picked the kind of bud you want, it’s time to grind it. Grinding your weed is arguably the most important part of the process as weed that is evenly and finely ground will ensure that you have a super smooth smoking experience. Properly ground weed will also prevent things like unwanted canoeing or clogging from happening.

(Pro tip: if you don’t have a grinder, don’t worry––we came up with solutions for that, too! You can read all about how to grind weed without a grinder here.)

Step 2: Empty the Backwood of loose tobacco.

Backwoods are filled with tobacco just like most other blunts, so you have to unwrap them and dump the tobacco out before you can fill them with weed and roll them.

This is usually the part where people start to get intimidated if it’s their first time rolling a Backwood. Unlike blunt wraps such as Cigarillos or the inside of Dutch Masters that have a sturdy inner blunt inside (you know, the ones that you crack down the middle) Backwoods don’t have an inner roll like that. Instead, they’re much more like the leaf that you find on the outside of a Dutch Master.

When they’re unrolled, Backwoods can be a little on the fragile side, which can make getting the hang of rolling them a little bit tedious. But it’s the delicacy of the tobacco that’s part of what makes the smoking experience of a Backwood so elite.

Once your backwood is empty, flatten out the leaf on your rolling tray or flat surface and get ready to fill it with weed.

Step 3: Fill your Backwood with your ground weed.

Next, you’ll your Backwood with your ground weed. Make sure you distribute your weed in an even manner throughout the tobacco leaf to make sure that the Backwood burns as evenly as possible. Again, this will help to avoid other issues like canoeing or constantly going out as well.

Since the Backwood leaf isn’t quite as symmetrical as the blunts that you may be used to, it may take a little bit of finagling before you find the sweet spot to put the weed. But just envision the tobacco leaf kind of like an eggroll wrap––you’ll have to lay it at somewhat of an angle before you start filling it, but once you start rolling it will begin to straighten itself out and make sense.

Step 4: Roll your Backwood.

Finally, it’s time to roll your Backwood blunt. This process is going to be a bit different from rolling other kids of blunts like Swisher Sweets or Cigarillos since there’s no inner blunt to work with. However, if you’re familiar with rolling Dutch Masters, this may be a little bit easier than you think.

If you’ve never rolled a Dutch Master before, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered here. But if you already know what’s up, basically this process is just like rolling the outer leaf of the Dutch Master, just without the inner blunt.

Once you have your weed evenly placed, you can begin the process of tucking and rolling. You’ll take the edge of the tobacco leaf and roll it over itself until it begins to meet again and create a tunnel. Once it wraps around itself, you’ll have the opportunity to create a moisture-activated seal. This is where you’ll either lick the edge or dab it with a (very) small amount of water.

You can keep the width of the blunt consistent or you can taper it down a bit towards the end that you want to use as a mouthpiece. Whatever girth you choose, continue this process of tucking and rolling all the way up the length of the tobacco leaf until you’ve fully rolled all of the weed. There will most likely be a little excess leaf at the end of your roll, so you can either cut (or bite) that piece off so your smoking tip is even.

Step 5: Seal your Backwood.

Lastly, it’s time to seal your Backwood blunt wrap. Just like any other blunt wrap, Backwoods are sealed by moisture, so you’ll either use your saliva by licking it or use a tiny bit of water by dabbing it on the edges to seal it closed.

Backwoods are fragile and a bit damp by nature, so you definitely don’t need a lot of moisture when you’re sealing them. A little goes a long way. Once it’s all rolled, you may want to leave it out for a few minutes to dry. (Pro tip: You can also lightly run the flame of your lighter over the length of the blunt to speed up the drying process.)

Step 6: Enjoy your Rolled Backwood smoking experience!

There’s a reason so many people love smoking Backwoods blunts with their weed. The time and care that goes into growing, aging, and curating the tobacco can really be seen front and center when you smoke weed with them. Roll up and enjoy!
