How Much HHC Should I Take?

HHC, one of the most novel compounds derived from hemp, has been fairly popular recently. Much like other compounds derived from this plant, it follows the heel of being psychoactive, such as delta 8 THC, THCO, and THCV.

While very similar to the delta 8 THC experience, you might ask yourself how much HHC you should take. This semi-synthetic cannabinoid can provide a different onset than either delta 8 or delta 9 THC

The key thing about HHC is that it passes through a process that binds hydrogen atoms. In the end, this creates a totally different effect when it binds to the receptors of our endocannabinoid system.

If you are interested in this, you can learn more about HHC, the recommended dosage, and other things you have to know before trying an edible or tincture that’s been infused with this compound. Let’s jump into some of the basics first.

Key Takeaways

  • HHC is a psychoactive cannabinoid considered semi-synthetic due to its very low presence in hemp.
  • While derived from delta 9 THC, HHC does not have a trace of this cannabinoid and instead passes through a process called hydrogenation.
  • This cannabinoid is pretty popular in edible form thanks to its properties keeping the potency at bay from degradation.
  • If you are thinking of starting HHC, start with smaller doses and slowly build up the amount you have with each experience. Some users have reported that HHC can feel even stronger than delta 9 THC in edible form as well.

What is HHC

Hexahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive compound naturally found in small portions of the hemp plant. Also known as HHC, this phytocannabinoid is considered semi-synthetic since it is not as present as delta 9 THC or CBD.

This cannabinoid was first discovered in the 1940s. This scientist, named Roger Adams, tried adding hydrogen to the original THC molecule so it could change its physical properties. As a fun fact, the discovery of this process was actually patented in 1947 and is the precursor of margarine and other products with a more stable shelf life.

Much like THC-O, it passes through a chemical process to create this cannabinoid a little easier. While the first cannabinoid adds an oxygen particle through acetate to the compound, HHC uses hydrogenation and stabilizes the original THC molecules with hydrogen.

This is the same process that margarine passes through when it is converted from oil, creating a shelf-stable product. The same happens with HHC, adding properties like skipping the light and temperature degradation that occurs with delta 9 THC and allowing it to be used in edibles and other products without losing its potency for longer.

So, in a nutshell, this compound is a more stable version of delta 9 THC that’s been processed with hydrogen.

How Much THC is in HHC

None! All the delta 9 THC is transformed into HHC thanks to adding hydrogen in the chemical process. This compound changes thanks to a complicated process in a dedicated lab with safety procedures.

Scientists can “infuse” hydrogen bonds into the compound by adding a base to the hemp-extracted THC. Much like the creation of HHC-O and THC-O, this process needs lab equipment and safety procedures, so we don’t recommend doing it at home.

While similar to delta 9, thanks to its psychoactive properties and interaction with our endocannabinoid system, HHC has about 80% of its potency. This makes it stronger than delta 8 THC but with fewer side effects than regular THC.

This is also why lately, you can find more infused products with HHC, as it does not degrade and lose its potency as easily as delta 9 THC. This cannabinoid breaks down into CBN, which is also known for its “old weed” flavor and smell.

Lastly, since HHC is also fully hemp-derived, it follows the Farm Bill at a federal level in 2018. This means you can easily buy products with these cannabinoids wherever hemp is allowed, which is accessible through online or over-the-counter shopping without any hassle, unlike medicinal cannabis or non-hemp-derived THC.

How Many MG of HHC Should I Take for the First Time?

This is a little complicated to answer because it depends on several things. First, you have to know what HHC feels like. If you are an experienced cannabinoid user, you’ll find it pretty similar to delta 9 THC, and some users even report that it can feel even stronger in edible form due to how it can stay fresher for longer.

That said, it all comes down to tolerance. Since HHC is pretty potent, users recommend starting with small doses like half a gummy, half a dropper, or 1 through 3 puffs from a pen.

With that in mind, newcomers should stay 5-12mg zone. Consumers with a little more experience can go anywhere between 15 and 30mg of this cannabinoid. This is the usual dose for gummies, so don’t worry about having to measure the milligrams of your gummy exactly.

Lastly, cannaseurs and pros can go anywhere up to 55mg of HHC. That is usually between 1.5 and 2 gummies or 12 tokes from a vape pen. Make sure to build your experience slowly, as HHC edibles are believed to hit even harder because of the hydrogen atoms that bind to the cannabinoid receptors.

How Much HHC Edibles Should I Take?

Edibles can be a fun experience, but it all depends on how much you take. As we mentioned above, the newbie dose is usually up to 12mg of HHC. In edible terms, this means half a gummy, half a beverage, or even half of a dropper.

For the standard experience, you can usually refer to the dispensaries’ ingredients or options to check out the standard dose. Keep in mind though the “recommend” dose considers the users as someone who has a regular resistance level or someone who has experienced cannabinoids before.

These numbers are usually referred to when using this compound for recreational use. If you want to use it for wellness goals, you might be better off with smaller doses that you can slowly build up.

Our recommendation is to take half a dose at first and slowly increase the dose. If you use an infused product like tinctures, you can easily try half a dropper and slowly adjust in quarters as you see fit.

That said, you might be tempted to take a full gummy all at once. Let’s explore why gummies and these kinds of edibles are a little more special than other cannabinoids’.

How Much HHC Gummies Should I Take?

As mentioned above, HHC can keep its potency fresh for longer in edibles thanks to its hydrogen atoms. These make the compound more resistant to what usually makes delta 9 THC lose its potencies, such as light, temperature, and even moisture.

Thus, start with a smaller dose than you’d usually do for delta 8 THC. Half a gummy should be more than enough if you have never tried HHC. A full gummy with about 25mg will provide a pretty similar experience to delta 9 THC but slightly milder and with more of a cerebral buzz.

As a safety tip, when starting with a new cannabinoid, go with smaller doses you can still get control of and increase as you see fit. Specifically, with gummies, we’d wait and set up different experiences for each increase. Having one too many gummies without resistance can result in some side effects like anxiety or nausea.

Most side effects from hemp-derived cannabinoids are associated with either a low tolerance to cannabinoids in our system or high doses. So before you start with a hefty dose you might want to start slowly.
