Does THCP Get You High? How Strong Is It?

Man vaping while sitting down leaning on a fence.

As science advances and cannabis research progresses, it’s been possible to break down cannabis into its constituent components. As a result, we can now talk about compounds like cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), terpenes, flavonoids, and many more.

More importantly, we are much more aware of their pharmaceutical significance. CBD and THC have probably been the more talked about cannabis compounds in recent times. Others, like THCP, are less popular, so people don’t know much about them.

So, let’s learn more about THCP, shall we?

Key Takeaways

  • THCP, or tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is a little-known phytocannabinoid that exists naturally in extremely low quantities in cannabis.
  • Discovered in 2019, the full range of its effects on the human body remains unknown.
  • It binds to CB1 receptors 33x more firmly than THC hence the notion that it’s more potent than THC.
  • Though research is scanty, this attribute makes scientists hypothesize that THCP may actually have a stronger “high” than THC.

What is THCP?

THCP stands for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabiphorol, and as you can tell, the name is quite a mouthful. So, people mostly shorten it to THC-heptyl or delta 9 THCP. Other abbreviations you are likely to come across are THCp, THC-P, or delta-p.

It’s a recent discovery by Italian researchers who accidentally stumbled upon it while analyzing a strain of marijuana.

THCP is a cannabinoid found in cannabis. It’s an analog of THC (delta 9 THC), the primary psychoactive compound of cannabis. However, it exists in very low concentrations, so it’s mostly lab-synthesized from CBD.

After the unprecedented commercial success of delta 8 THC, players in the cannabis industry leveraged the new discovery to develop a cannabinoid capable of competing with THC. Already, there are different THC-like cannabinoids on the market, such as delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, THC-O (an acetate ester of THC), and hexahydrocannabinol (HHC).

So, even though THCP broadens the options for cannabis users, it also offers new therapeutic possibilities for medical patients. But you’ll have to be patient for a little while as researchers conduct more investigations about THCP.

How Strong is THCP?

So, what’s special about THCP

Well, researchers think it’s more potent than THC! According to the Italians who discovered this unique phytocannabinoid, it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and has a much stronger affinity for cannabinoid receptors.

In fact, they suggest its affinity to receptors is 33 times stronger than delta 9 THC!

This means its effects may be 33x as potent as THC’s. This unique ability comes from its much longer alkyl side chain compared to THC’s (seven carbon atoms versus five). This makes THCP attach more firmly to various cannabinoid receptors throughout the body.

For now, all we know about THCP comes from the 2019 study by the Italian scientists who discovered this compound. There is still no research about its effects on humans, so its side effects or safety issues remain unknown. We can only make these predictions based on THC’s pharmacokinetics because these two are very similar.

Is THCP Stronger than THC?

In their cultured human cell experiment, the scientists behind the discovery of THCP found that it binds to CB receptors, particularly CB1, 33 times more effectively than THC. This was due to a longer alkyl side chain with seven carbon atoms that made THCP chemically more reactive.

As a result, it takes a smaller amount of THCP than delta 9 THC to get the same physiological response by the ECS.

THC-P Effects

As things stand currently, researchers know very little about THCP. Discovered barely five years ago, this compound is new in the world of cannabis. There are no published studies about it apart from the original findings of the team that discovered it.

Furthermore, only a handful of people have used it. Also, no cannabis products currently on the market contain THCP as a standalone cannabinoid; most contain blends of THC analogs.

Nonetheless, evidence of its potential therapeutic value is promising.

Given that it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors just like THC, it may offer substantial relief to patients with chronic pain. Usually, such patients would require large amounts of THC, but with THCP, only a tiny amount would be needed.

Slightly higher doses of THCP would probably help patients with chronic insomnia or pain.

But, until research on this compound is complete, we have no concrete evidence to know exactly how it would affect humans. Even though it may be more potent than THC and have more pronounced effects, there’s no evidence to support these claims.

As we’ve seen, THCP binds to cannabinoid receptors 33 times more firmly than THC. That means it has more intense psychoactivity even at smaller doses. So, consuming a lot of THCP may potentially induce unwanted side effects like paranoia, lethargy, dry mouth, dizziness, etc. it could even have new yet-to-be-known side effects.

It’s also noteworthy that this compound is naturally available in such meager amounts. So, it may be difficult to predict the impact it has on the overall effect of cannabis.

There is a theory that the presence of THCP could be why some cannabis varieties are stronger than others. This is despite having more or less the same THC levels. However, there is no way to tell if this is true.

If cannabis breeders develop strains with higher THCP content, we may be in a better position to know its effects.

Does THCP Get You High?

Currently, there is no definitive information on how THCP affects the human body. But going by its ability to attach to receptors very strongly, it may give a stronger high than THC.

In any case, we are not even sure if THCP is safe for human consumption. However, there is no reason to think it may be harmful, but there is a need to exercise caution. We do know it can effectively get you high, even more than delta 9 THC.

Nevertheless, more research is needed.

So, as we wait for more findings about THCP, we at Delta Munchies have an exciting array of delta 8, delta 9, and HHC products that will meet your health requirements. Here are some fan favorites:
