Does HHC Get You Higher Than Delta 8?

Marijuana bud on a pink and blue clouded sky.

Minor cannabinoids are the latest craze in the cannabis and hemp worlds. You’ve probably been hearing about them a lot: delta 8, HHC, delta 10, THCV, CBN, you name it.

The 2018 Farm Bill made hemp-derived cannabis products containing less than 0.3% of THC legal across all states, although certain states have since criminalized or regulated certain cannabinoids. There are over 100 cannabinoids found in hemp and cannabis, all with different effects and benefits. While some are psychoactive, others are not.

At Delta Munchies, we put our heart and soul into cannabinoid products, whether they’re regular delta 9 THC or other cannabinoids. If your heart is calling you to try out alternatives to delta 9, it’s always best to research and find out if they’re the right option for you.

Let’s talk about a cannabinoid that’s been making its way across the market: HHC.

Key Takeaways

  • HHC is psychoactive but 20%-30% less than delta 9. Its effects resemble those of sativa strains.
  • Delta 8 THC is psychoactive but 30%-40% less than delta 9. Its effects resemble those of indica strains.
  • HHC is a little bit stronger than delta 8.

What is HHC?

HHC stands for hexahydrocannabinol, a compound that occurs naturally in cannabis. It is essentially a hydrogenated form of delta 8 and delta 9, containing an extra hydrogen atom. This makes it more chemically stable than the precursors.

Since HHC exists only in trace amounts, producers predominantly make it from the THCs,’ i.e., delta 8 and delta 9. So, it is primarily a semi-synthetic cannabinoid (SSC)—an emerging breed of cannabis compounds highlighting the possibilities of coupling science and nature.

Interestingly, HHC is also a byproduct when cannabis (or extracts and concentrates) degrades. This happens when THC converts to CBN through a process known as the disproportionation reaction.

Does HHC Get You High?

HHC, or hexahydrocannabinol, is a minor cannabinoid that is naturally-occurring in cannabis, although in small amounts.

HHC is psychoactive, which means it will get you high. Still, it’s not as potent as regular delta 9 THC. It’s said to be 70-80% as powerful as delta 9, so you’ll definitely feel high but not as high as if you ingested regular weed.

Because it’s found in such small amounts, it’s usually manufactured in a lab by a process called hydrogenation, which is when hydrogen molecules are used to solidify, preserve or purify raw materials.

Although it was first discovered in 1944, the science community is still working on properly researching it to determine its benefits and effects.

What is Delta 8 THC?

Delta 8 THC is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that resembles delta 9. The major difference between these two is the location of a double bond in their carbon chain. In delta 8, the double bond is situated at the 8th carbon atom, while in delta 9, it is located at the 9th carbon atom.

Unlike delta 9, delta 8 is not produced in large amounts. Much of THCA in cannabis breaks down into delta 9, with delta 8 broadly considered a byproduct of this process.

In recent years, delta 8 has become quite popular among cannabis users thanks to its mild psychoactive effects and potential health benefits. However, its legality continues to be a thorny matter, with some states considering banning it.

Does Delta 8 Get You High?

Delta 8 THC is another minor cannabinoid that has been making waves in the community.

This cannabinoid is a chemical cousin of delta 9: the only difference is where the double bond is found within its chemical structure. As you might be able to guess by the name, the double bond in delta 9 is found on the 9th chain, while it’s found on the 8th chain in delta 8.

Because of this tiny (but madly differentiating) chemical difference, delta 8 isn’t as potent as its cousin. Still, it can get you high because it is psychoactive.

Difference Between HHC and Delta 8

HHC and delta 8 are both psychoactive cannabinoids capable of inducing mild psychoactive effects. They also share some pharmacological effects. However, they are different in several ways.

For starters, HHC is not a classic tetrahydrocannabinol like delta 8. It may be psychoactive, but this does not qualify it as a THC cannabinoid.

Secondly, both cannabinoids are made differently. Delta 8 results from the isomerization of CBD, while HHC is made by hydrogenating delta 8 (or delta 9). However, both processes start with hemp CBD. In the case of HHC, hemp CBD is first converted to delta 8 (isomerized), then HHC (hydrogenated).

Moreover, because it is saturated, HHC is oxidatively more stable than delta 8 (and delta 9, too). This means it has a longer shelf life than delta 8. As such, HHC products can last longer than delta 8 products.

Another notable difference between HHC and delta 8 is their degree of psychoactivity. There are no empirical studies on HHC’s psychoactivity, so we mostly rely on anecdotes. HHC is generally portrayed as having 80% the potency of delta 9, which makes it stronger than delta 8.

However, such claims need scientific validation.

Currently, there are no pharmacological studies of HHC in humans. What we know, however, is that HHC products produce THC-like effects.

Is Delta 8 Stronger than HHC?

Delta 8 is not stronger than HHC. Both are psychoactively weaker than delta 9 THC, meaning they do not produce intense effects. One of the downsides of THC’s stronger psychoactivity is that some users experience adverse effects, especially after taking large doses.

For this reason, we recommend taking lower doses of psychoactive cannabinoids. You can up the dose once you have assessed how you respond. Generally, the recreational benefits of cannabinoids are realized at lower doses.

Since the concentrations of these cannabinoids vary with the product, it is not uncommon to find a delta 8 product stronger than an HHC product.

Does HHC Get You as High as Delta 8?

With their psychoactivity levels being quite close, this really depends on how much of each cannabinoid you take. Logically, a user who takes 20mg of delta 8 might experience a stronger high than another who takes 8mg of HHC.

However, HHC is thought to be marginally stronger than delta 8. So, milligram-per-milligram, it is likely to induce a slightly more potent high than delta 8.

HHC Effects vs. Delta 8

While all psychoactive cannabinoids can have similar effects, there are slight differences that can help you decide which one is right for you.

Let’s get into the effects of HHC vs. delta 8.

HHC is often said to produce effects similar to those of sativa strains.

  • An energizing cerebral high with body relaxation.
  • It can increase focus and concentration.
  • A euphoric feeling that’s slightly less pronounced than with traditional THC.

On the other hand, delta 8 is the more well-known minor cannabinoid that has indica-esque effects.

  • It may help calm your mind and body.
  • It can give you the “munchies” by stimulating your appetite.
  • You might feel mildly euphoric.
  • It may help you sleep better.

HHC vs. Delta 8 Potency

Both cannabinoids are mildly psychoactive and produce a pleasant subtle high. One of the notable advantages is that typical THC side effects like paranoia, confusion, lethargy, etc., do not accompany the high.

Instead, users laud these cannabinoids for their energetic, mentally stimulating high. As such, they are popular among users seeking to relax and uplift their moods. What’s more, they might also help with physical pain and stress.

HHC Gummies vs. Delta 8

HHC is chemically more stable than delta 8. As such, HHC gummies can maintain their freshness (hence potency) longer than delta 8 gummies. So, if you are just starting HHC, we suggest beginning with a lower dose, i.e., half a gummy (12.5mg for 25mg HHC gummies).

Edibles are especially tricky since the onset time takes longer (30-60 minutes). So, most newbies tend to undermine their potency to disastrous outcomes.

HHC vs. Delta 8: What Gets You Higher?

If you compare HHC and delta 8, HHC is a bit stronger than the latter. Think of HHC as the stepping stone between delta 8 and delta 9: stronger than the first but not as intense as the second.

Still, it all comes down to how much you consume. Obviously, a higher dose of delta 8 will feel more intense than a lower dose of HHC, and vice versa.

It’s always best to start off with a low dose, especially if it’s your first time. Once you’ve discovered the right dosage for your needs, you can increase or decrease it as necessary.

HHC vs. Delta 8 According to Reddit

When talking about cannabinoids that are still being adequately researched, we must turn to the people.

The real-life experiences of those who have consumed HHC and delta 8 give us insight into what the differences are. And where do we find these people? Reddit, of course.

According to Reddit, most people looking for a more potent high prefer HHC over delta 8. Some also mention HHC being more anxiety- and paranoia-friendly than delta 8, but this can vary from person to person.

The fact that HHC and delta 8 are legal in most states is also a reason why so many people are turning to minor cannabinoids. Although hemp-derived, products containing HHC and delta 8 can have similar effects to delta 9, without the legal implications.

Still, make sure to check current laws in your state before indulging in these products.

HHC vs. Delta 8 THC: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Delta 8 Stronger than HHC?

Delta 8 is not stronger than HHC. If anything, HHC is thought to be marginally more potent than delta 8.

What Type of High Does HHC Give You?

HHC’s high is described as quite similar to delta 9’s, including the much sought-after feelings of euphoria and relaxation. It also appears to induce ‘the munchies” as well as sleep. However, it does not have THC’s negative effects like anxiety, confusion, panic attacks, etc.

Which HHC is the Strongest?

HHC is the same compound regardless of the form in which you take it. However, the effects typically vary due to the differing pharmacokinetics of different HHC products. That said, edibles produce the strongest, longer-lasting effects.

Is HHC Better for Anxiety?

There is no scientific evidence supporting HHC’s suitability for anxiety. However, since it interacts with the body’s cannabinoid receptors in the same way as delta 9 (which exhibits anti-anxiety properties), HHC may have similar benefits.

Will HHC Give Me Anxiety?

HHC is roughly 60-80% as potent as delta 9. We know that delta 9 can produce adverse effects in large doses, including anxiety. So, it is likely that taking large quantities of HHC can create anxiety.

Does HHC Make Your Eyes Red?

On this, we are not sure. However, given the close similarity between HHC and delta (which can cause red eyes), we cannot rule out this possibility.

Is HHC Legal?

HHC products exist and thrive in a murky legal zone. Sellers are exploiting a loophole in law since this cannabinoid is not listed in international anti-drug conventions. Similarly, it is not scheduled under the CSA.

Many argue that since HHC exists naturally in hemp—which is legal—it is equally legal. However, skeptics counter that under the Federal Analog Act, any substance analogous to a Schedule I drug can qualify as a Schedule I drug. HHC bears significant similarities to THC, which is a Schedule I drug.
