10 Ways To Get Higher

Once you’ve been a stoner for long enough, you eventually come to a point where the weed just doesn’t hit as hard as it used to. It can feel like no matter how much you smoke, you just can’t get any higher. The reason for this frustrating problem is primarily due to an increase in your tolerance.

A tolerance to cannabis develops after heavy or regular use (usually both). Thich results in the body being able to withstand more and more THC at one time (or whichever cannabinoid you’re using, because you can even develop a tolerance to cannabinoids like delta 8 and CBD.)

Unfortunately, this build-up in tolerance also means that you’ll need more and more of your preferred product––whether it’s bud, vape juice, dabs, or edibles––to get high. Not only does this burn through your stash much faster, but it can also get really expensive really fast.

Once your tolerance hits a certain ceiling, it can leave you trying to figure out how to increase your high once you’re there. (Because let’s be real, we all want to replicate that “first high” feeling.) Since this is a common problem for so many regular cannabis users, it has people searching far and wide for ways to figure out how to get higher off weed.

Thankfully, that’s why we’re here! You know we always want you to have the best cannabis experience possible, so we’ve compiled a list of ways to help you get higher.

How to Have the Best High

Before you learn how to enhance your high, you need to know how to have a good high in general. So, let’s quickly break down exactly how the body processes cannabis.

The human body processes cannabinoids through a naturally-occurring system called the endocannabinoid system (or ECS.) This endocannabinoid system gives us cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) throughout our nervous and immune systems, respectively. When cannabinoids like THC and CBD reach these receptors, they react with each other to give us the effects that we know and love from the cannabis plant, such as:

  • Elevated mood
  • Feelings of relaxation
  • Feelings of happiness and euphoria
  • Pain relief
  • Inflammation relief
  • Sleep aid and help with insomnia
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Psychoactive experiences or “highs.”

There are a couple of things you can do to optimize your cannabis experience to have the best high possible. We recommend doing things like:

  • Eating a well-balanced meal before consuming cannabis:

It’s just as important to have something in your stomach before ingesting high levels of cannabinoids as it is to have something in your stomach before drinking alcohol.

  • Making sure your pipes, bongs, or rigs are clean:

A glass piece clogged with resin will hinder your ability to take big hits, thus wasting a lot of your product.

  • Smoking with people you trust:

This is always our biggest piece of advice, because there’s nothing worse than seshing with people who aren’t conducive to your energy while high.

But if you want to learn how to get more high, we’ve got you covered, too. We’ve gathered 10 ways to get higher when your traditional methods just aren’t quite cutting it.

10 Ways to Get Higher

Whether you’re looking for how to boost your high or how to get higher faster, we’ve picked out ten of our favorite ways to get higher when you’re looking for an extra boost to your cannabis experience.

Make sure your weed is appropriately stored

If you feel like your weed or weed product isn’t quite doing the trick, it may be because it’s being improperly stored.

Pretty much all weed products should be stored in airtight containers to make sure they don’t dry out or go stale. Weed flower can dry out when exposed to the air, which will get rid of any of the stickiness that’s so often sought after when it comes to good bud.

Since they’re food items, edibles like brownies and gummies can go stale (and even go bad) if left out in the open air. And while a stale edible doesn’t always mean less potent, it can still hinder the experience, which in turn can hinder the high.

Additionally, if you’re using things like tinctures, make sure you keep them in a cool, dark place. If you leave them open to a lot of heat or direct sunlight, it can cause the mixture inside to break down and become less potent. (There’s a reason most tinctures come in brown glass––it protects them from the sun!)

Make sure your weed is used correctly

Sometimes the trick is making sure that you’re actually using your weed in the right way. And if you’re asking yourself, “who doesn’t know how to use weed correctly?” you’d be surprised at just how many people don’t actually know the proper way to get the best effects out of their cannabis products.

For example, if you’re smoking bud, it’s super important to make sure you’re grinding your weed for optimal burning surface area. Some people don’t think grinding your weed is necessary, but we disagree. You can have great weed, but if you don’t grind your weed correctly, it can leave you with joints and blunts that don’t smoke correctly or bongs, bowls, and pipes that don’t hit right. (No grinder? No problem! We’ve curated a guide on how to grind weed without a grinder.)

If you’re vaping, there are a few different things you should be doing to optimize your experience. Carts can sometimes get clogged with solidified concentrate, so it’s essential to check it regularly for clogs and unclog it if need be. Additionally, most vape carts will hit better after they’re a little warmed up, so we recommend holding your cart in your hand or somewhere close on your body for a bit to warm it up before use.

If you’re smoking dabs, make sure your rigs are at the right temperature. The typical range of heat for a dab is anywhere from 500 degrees F to 700 degrees F. This is broad, but primarily down to personal preference/level experience. Although most people recommend not going too hot; if you’re making your dabs too hot, you may actually be burning them, which burns off valuable THC. Hot dabs are also harsher, so you may also be wasting a lot of product by exhaling/coughing a lot of it out. A cooler dab may not seem like it hits as hard, but trust us, it can be just as powerful and potent as a super hot one.

And if you’re eating edibles or taking tinctures, the most important rule is to make sure that you’re eating the right amount. Since these two methods of consumption are digested by the stomach and processed by the liver rather than through the lungs like smoking or vaping, your tolerance to these may be very different. Edibles are typically stronger than weed, so make sure you know how to dose yourself properly, and you can build up your high from there.

Switch up your method of consumption.

Changing your method of consumption can have a considerable effect on how high you get. There are plenty of people who can smoke a blunt to the face but will be knocked out by a 10mg edible (and vice versa.) You may think you have a high THC tolerance because you consume a lot of it in one way, but the method of consumption actually has a lot to do with how your body absorbs the cannabinoid and thus how strong the effects are.

Methods like smoking and vaping are inhaled through the lungs and absorbed directly into the bloodstream for an instant and intense but somewhat fleeting high. On the other hand, edibles and tinctures are digested through the stomach and processed through the liver, which means the effects will be delayed, but when they hit, they hit strong and stay long.

Additionally, everyone’s unique physiology plays a huge role in how you react to cannabis. Depending on things like your body mass, metabolism, and overall health, some specific methods of consumption may be stronger for you than others.

Try new weed combinations

If simply switching it up doesn’t do the trick, you may need to try some new combinations. The best part about cannabis is that you can get really creative with it and find different routines or combinations that work the best for you!

Some people like to smoke while at the peak of their edible experience because it can supercharge the effects of the edibles, while others like to trick out their joints with things like wax, rosin, and kief. If you’re a seasoned professional, it might be time for you to dip your toe into some of these extra strong weed combos.

(Pro tip: if you’re bored with edibles or bud, you can even get creative with THC-infused drinks!)

Roll a spliff

Spliffs are what they call joints over the pond, but in America, the word ‘spliff’ is commonly used to refer to a joint with tobacco mixed into it. Some people roll spliffs as a way to conserve weed since it can help fill out a thin joint, but others do it for the head buzz.

Tobacco is known for giving its users a head buzz when smoked. Combined with weed, it can temporarily make you feel higher. If you’re not into the idea of sprinkling tobacco into your joint, this will also work with blunt wraps, since the leaves are made out of tobacco.

Eat mangoes or drink mango juice

It’s actually not a myth that eating mangoes or drinking mango juice will get you higher! It’s real, and there’s even science behind it. Mangoes and cannabis share a terpene called myrcene. Different terpenes are responsible for different feelings associated with cannabis, and myrcene is the terpene in cannabis that’s mostly responsible for the feelings of relaxation and sleepiness. In high doses, myrcene can induce feelings of lethargy and “couch-lock” which can make the user feel even higher. When you drink mango juice, you are adding more myrcene to the myrcene you’ve already consumed in the cannabis, which will exacerbate the effects of the terpene thus making you feel higher.

Eat foods high in omega-3

Similar to mangoes and mango juice, foods high in omega-3 can also help to amplify the effects of weed. In 2017, a team of scientists discovered four different endocannabinoids derived from omega-3 fatty acids: EPA ethanolamide, DHA ethanolamide, EPA glycerol, and DHA glycerol. Since they are so recently discovered, there is still a lot to be learned about these endocannabinoids, but the research done thus far suggests that similar to eating mangoes or drinking mango juice, eating foods high in omega-3 can make you feel higher.

Work up some endorphins

Exercising before you smoke can actually help you to get higher. (There’s a reason they call it “runner’s high!”) Working out causes a massive release of endorphins has been dubbed the body’s natural high, and in conjunction with a weed high, it can make you feel downright euphoric. Additionally, since THC is delivered throughout the bloodstream, getting your blood pumping and working up your cardiovascular system will get the THC to your brain faster, which can make you feel a lot higher.

Responsibly drink a beer

DISCLAIMER: Listen, when we say responsibly, WE MEAN IT! It can be extremely hazardous to mix large quantities of alcohol and marijuana. And while we always want you to have a good time, we want you to have a safe time even more. Please ALWAYS practice extreme caution when mixing these two substances!

Now, with our disclaimer out of the way and our trust in you that you will be responsible human beings, there is something to be said about the mixture of good weed and a good beer. If you are in a safe environment, you are not driving, and you are with people you trust, having a light beer can be the perfect complement to some cannabis. In fact, there are even cannabis-infused beers!

Take a tolerance break

If all else fails, it’s time for the infamous t-break. We know this can be a harsh reality to hear for the daily stoner, but sometimes the only solution is to let your body naturally reset its tolerance. When you give your body a break from the constant presence of cannabinoids, the next time you consume cannabis, the effects will hit you a lot harder than they did before. A tolerance break might be hard to get through at first, but in the end, it’s worth it.
